Painting the town orange, blue, white, green and gold!

As a focal piece of the ever-expanding ICE District, design elements of Stantec Tower pay subtle homage to the Edmonton Oilers, who call nearby Rogers Place home ice.

Incorporating orange, blue and white in a skyscraper (and keeping it tasteful) is no easy feat. Using blue glass (instead of typical green), white soffits and canopies, and orange terra cotta tiles along the building’s base were the designers’ way of acknowledging that the Edmonton Oilers remain one of the ICE District’s biggest attractions (dismal on-ice performance notwithstanding).

From design to construction, sustainability was a priority for Stantec Tower. The building’s core and shell targeted LEED Gold 2009 standards and many power- and water-saving features were included in the overall design. Some of the green design elements include:

  • Implementation of daylight harvesting, occupancy sensors, lighting controls, and refrigeration/heat recovery systems
  • Greywater recycled for water closets
  • Native landscaping reduces water consumption and maintenance
  • 75% of construction material diverted from the landfill while Stantec tenant space was being built

A towering achievement everyone can enjoy

It was important to the design team that Stantec Tower integrate with the public plaza space outside Rogers Place. “We are proud to have both our people and our designer’s work play a role in enhancing the vibrancy of the Edmonton Arena District, said Bob Gomes, president and CEO of Stantec.

The main entrance of the tower opens up right into the plaza which, when complete, will be 50,000 sq. ft. of public gathering space designed to bring people together all year-round.

Stantec Tower’s podium will have a rooftop patio that can fit 700 people and features a food court, a gym and a restaurant/bar, and it all surrounds the plaza that can hold 10,000 people — all in all, a perfect event space for Edmontonians to come out and celebrate together.

It makes you wonder if the architects were hoping for a Field of Dreams scenario in the Ice District. If we build it, will Lord Stanley’s cup finally come back? Let’s hope so!
